 Earth Matters, the shop, was set up in North Berwick in 2001 by Alan and Irene Croal, to provide an outlet for fair-trade and eco-products. When they moved north to Gairloch in 2003, the shop was kept going by a part-time manager and a group of volunteers. As the shop gradually found its feet and the volunteers grew more committed to keeping it going, a steering committee was formed to discuss the future of the shop. At the beginning of 2006, we became Earth Matters Ltd and bought the business from the Croals.
We are a not-for-profit organisation, and the shop continues to sell Fairtrade goods and promote environmentally-friendly products. We are still staffed primarily by volunteers and we also run a membership scheme for those who care about the world in which they live. The business is going from strength to strength. We have recently moved to larger premises and expanded our range of products.
